Main Market Square
Main Market Square is one of the largest and oldest squares in Europe. It was laid out when Krakow received its new municipal charter in 1257. This spacious square is also surrounded by tall townhouses and palaces but its most famous monument is the Church of St Mary.
Each side of the Main Square repeats a pattern of three, evenly- spaced streets at right angels to the square, except for the southern corner where the much older Grodzka Street takes the place of two streets. Today, Krakow's Main Square is the natural centre of the city: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and a starting point of destination for countless walkers.
