Arka Church

Communism system was the enemy of Catholic church so the city planners of Nowa Huta did not prepared any areas for churches. It took a long time and many mass demonstrations to finally get permission to build a new church in Nowa Huta. It happened in 1957.

Since that time it took again a few years of struggle to finish the construction. Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland “The Ark” was finally consecrated on 15^thMay 1977. The name “Ark” comes from its design which looks like Noah's Ark. There is a layer of stones representing the ground, then layer of glass representing water and finally on the top – boat-shaped roof. Over the roof there is also a 70 meters high cross symbolizing a mast. The whole construction is very impressive. [Nowa Huta]
