Archeological Museum

Archeological Museum in Krakow is the oldest museum of this type in Poland. It was founded in 1850 and its first name was “Museum of Ancient times”. Today it has one of the best collections of Slavic antiquities in Poland.

It houses a pre-Christian stone idol of Swiatowid of Zbrucz, well known across the Slavic world. Reconstructed cityscapes and artefacts show the Krakow’s earliest history. There is also a small but precious collection of Egyptian mummies with high-tech analysis of what lies inside. Some parts of the museum’s collection come from the area of former east regions of Poland which today belong to Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.
