A record number of tourists visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in 2016.
2, 053,000 people from all over the world visited the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, in 2016. This is a record in the history of the Memorial, which celebrates the 70th anniversary of the establishment this year.
The top ten countries from which visitors came were: Poland (424 thous.), United Kingdom (271 thous.), USA (215 thous.), Italy (146 thous.), Spain (115 thous.), Israel (97 thous.), Germany (92 thousand.), France (82 thous.), Czech Republic (60 thous.) and Sweden (41 thous.).
In 2016, the number of visitors increased significantly from: Portugal (115 percent), Italy (91 percent), Spain (68 percent), Israel (59 percent) and France (44 percent).
An unusual event which was held in the past year was the World Youth Days. During 12 days, 155,000 young people visited the Memorial. The record attendance was recorded on July 26, when the Memorial was visited by 21,000 pilgrims.
