Home > World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow
In the nearest time, in Krakow, we will host hundreds of thousands pilgrims from the whole world. Young people will come to the former capital of Poland to meet with the Pope Francis, with each other and with Jesus. The idea of WYD was created by the Pope John Paul II. The first event of that kind took place in 1985 in Rome. Since that time, this event was organised in numerous countries around the world. The last one was in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. The last day of WYD 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, on the Cocacabana Beach the Pope Francis announced that the next WYD would take place in Krakow.
The first pilgrims - volunteers came to all major cities in Poland and of course to Krakow the week before the central events of WYD 2016. On squares of various cities, there are organised festivals (Merci Festival) with concerts, worships, sermons from Monday 18, July to Sunday 24, July. On Monday and Tuesday (25-26 July) all pilgrims from around the world will gather in the Lesser Poland. They will stay in private houses, schools in Krakow and the closest to Krakow villages and towns. The program of WYD Krakow 2016 includes Catechetical Sessions, Youth Festivals with many concerts, workshops, shows, prayer, reconciliation opportunities, Stations of the Cross on Friday, Evening Vigil with the Pope on Saturday and the Holy Mass celebrated by the Pope on Sunday. Organizers prepared four main venues for central events. There are Błonia, Campus Misericordiae in Brzegi, the John Paul II Sanctuary and the Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki. The arrival of the Pope is on Thursday. The saint patrons of WYD Krakow 2016 are Saint Faustina and Saint John Paul II. The third figure is the image of Merciful Jesus (Divine Mercy devotion). The theme of WYD 2016 is: „Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy." (Mt5:7).
