Communism system was the enemy of Catholic church so the city planners of Nowa Huta did not prepared any areas for churches. It took a long time and many mass demonstrations to finally get permission to build a new church in Nowa Huta. It happened in 1957.

Since that time it took again a few years of struggle to finish the construction. Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland “The Ark” was finally consecrated on 15thMay 1977. The name “Ark” comes from its design which looks like Noah's Ark. There is a layer of stones representing the ground, then layer of glass representing water and finally on the top – boat-shaped roof. Over the roof there is also a 70 meters high cross symbolizing a mast. The whole construction is very impressive.
