Cechowa Restaurant in Krakow

Home > Restaurants > Polish > Cechowa Restaurant

The name of the restaurant comes from the word “cech” (a guild). “Cech” is an organization grouping representatives of one or a few related crafts, aimed at increasing skills, defence of rights and interests of members, for example – brick layers, tailors, opticians etc. First organizations of this type date back to the 10th – 12th century.

The building which houses the restaurant is the seat of Malopolska Chamber for Crafts and Entrepreneurship. The Chamber represents crafts from the Malopolska Province area. The decorations refer to the name of the restaurant. There are emblems of “cechs” (some of them no longer existing, like, for example, a “cech “ of halberdiers). A sister organization of the Chamber of Crafts is the Merchants Congregation (founded in 1410) and grouping traders. The present owner of the restaurant reactivated the Krakow Merchants Congregation in 1989 and became its head. The restaurant is a family business with over twenty years’ tradition.
