Planty in Kraków

Home > What to see > Old Town > Planty

Planty is Krakow's central park. It is actually a ring of greenery encircling Old Town of total length around 4 kilometers. It has one major walk with hundreds of benches. Perfect place to chill out in the shadow during hot and sunny summer days, also great place for a stroll.

The location of Planty corresponds with former double moat and city defense walls, removed in 1810 – 1814. Work started on the gardens in 1820 and Cracovians called them planty (plantations). In 1874, the first sculpture, an obelisk near the railway station was added and since then many other sculptures were erected in the park, mostly some important figures from Polish history and literature.
